Tree Care Guide
Keep your Christmas tree fresh and beautiful all season long with a few simple care tips.
1. Give your tree a fresh cut before it goes into water.
We’ll make a fresh cut for you at the farm before you head home. If more than 4–6 hours pass before you set it up, trim ¼–½ inch off the bottom of the trunk to reopen the pores.
2. Get your tree into water as soon as you can.
A fresh tree can drink up to a gallon of water in the first 24 hours. Make sure your stand is ready and filled when you bring the tree inside.
3. Check the water level daily.
Never let the water line fall below the base of the trunk. If it does, the tree can seal over with sap and stop drinking. Choose a stand that holds at least one gallon of water.
4. Keep your tree away from heat sources.
Avoid placing your tree directly next to fireplaces, space heaters, floor vents, or in full sun. A cooler room helps your tree stay fresh longer.
5. Use LED lights when possible.
LED lights stay cooler than traditional bulbs and are safer for live trees while also helping maintain moisture.
6. Just use plain water.
There’s no need for additives like aspirin, soda, or tree preservatives. Fresh water is all your tree needs.
7. Expect some natural needle drop.
A small amount of needle shedding is normal, especially when the tree first comes inside and warms up.
8. Safety first.
Turn off tree lights when you’re asleep or away from home, and make sure your stand is stable and secure.
With good care, most Christmas trees stay beautiful for several weeks. If you have any questions while you’re here at the farm, just ask—we’re happy to help!
A Note About Sap on Scotch Pine Trees
Scotch Pine trees are naturally high in sap — it’s what helps them stay fresh and hold needles well through the entire holiday season. You may notice some sticky areas on the trunk or branches when choosing or handling your tree. A little sap is completely normal and actually a sign of a healthy, fresh-cut tree.
Sap Removal Tips:
We shake and net every tree to help reduce loose needles and manage sap before it leaves the farm.
